Installation of renewable energy in health centres in Mali

Frequent power cuts, fuel shortages and the high costs of running generators are persistent realities in the Mopti region. This is why the Eyes of the world project in Mali implements improved and sustainable solutions to provide power to hospitals and health centres.

For the Sominé Dolo Hospital in Mopti, 20 solar panels have been purchased and installed, which are already supplying energy to the ophthalmology operating theatre, two consulting rooms, a minor surgery room, an echography room and the head of service’s office, thanks to the collaboration of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia. This energy is as necessary as it is difficult to obtain in the area.

And at the Koro Reference Health Centre, with the support of the la Caixa Foundation, 18 solar panels have been installed with a storage system that currently supplies energy to the ophthalmology operating theatre and also to the maternity unit just a few metres away, which urgently needed electricity. In fact, two premature babies have been saved thanks to this new solar energy system.

In addition, at the CSRef in Koro, various reforms have also been carried out to promote environmental sustainability, such as the installation of an energy-efficient air conditioning unit in the operating theatre and the improvement of the drinking water supply for the entire health centre by doubling the capacity of the storage system.
