Large amounts of waste are generated in health centres, and much of it can be hazardous because of its potential to spread disease. To avoid infection and ensure safety, it is essential to take the necessary measures, pre-select such waste, and have the means to dispose of it correctly.
To reinforce the skills of the socio-sanitary personnel of the Mopti districts in Mali, Eyes of the world organized a training workshop on managing biomedical waste in October. It was attended by 14 women and 16 men from the health districts of Mopti, Djenné, and the Sominé Dolo Hospital.
In this way, the health personnel acquired training to be able to give an operational resolution to the waste produced during eye health care:
- Knowing the equipment, materials, and tools necessary for the management of biomedical waste.
- Classifying waste in health centres.
- Identifying the risks linked to poor management of this waste.
- Mastering the different technical operations of the correct management chain (from production to final disposal).
- Knowing the operation, maintenance, and conservation of incinerators.
