The activities that Eyes of the world has been carrying out in the province of Inhambane have had an important component in the fight against inequality in equitable access to eye health.
Specifically, the activities recently implemented within the framework of the project have been based on the desire to reduce these inequalities by bringing eye care closer to the most rural and remote areas far from health centers, where there are neither trained professionals for ophthalmological practice, nor the necessary services to attend to patients. These are rural communities where the population suffers avoidable vision loss that receives neither treatment nor any kind of response within the framework of public health care.
In this sense, Eyes of the world has recently worked to reduce the prevalence of cataract blindness in the province by carrying out three surgical commissions in which 140 people have been operated on, 70% of them from rural areas.
Furthermore, women in the rural areas of Inhambane have the most difficulty in accessing ophthalmological care because the barriers linked to travel, and the economic resources required for their transport are even greater for them.
For this reason, the Foundation has worked to bring ophthalmological care closer to some rural hospitals such as those in Massigna or Quissico, thus decentralizing surgeries and promoting eye care for women.
The project has been supported by the City Councils of Andoain, Azkoitia, Baztán, Castellbisbal and Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
